Eight of Aesop's entertaining fables are retold here with a difference. Clever, imaginative reworkings of these timeless tales bring ancient Greece and the character of Aesop, the freed slave turned master storyteller, vividly to life. Aesop himself introduces each story with the real-life events that inspired his tale. Ideal for young readers who are beginning to enjoy reading alone, the stories are also perfect for sharing with younger children. Glowingly illustrated in warm, rich tones, these moral lessons remain as relevant to today's children as they were to the ancient Greeks.
This book became our favorite bed time storybook. A good selection of stories, at the right length with nicely drawn pictures.. One minor issue, the vocabulary is a little advanced for a 5-year old to listen..
Keeps the kids interested while teaching good character

I've been reading a story a day to my son (9) and daughter (7). They really enjoy the stories. It is very well written and reads wonderfully. I love that while the stories are definitely within their comprehension level, the vocabulary is not "dumbed down" but stretches them. This book is a hit in our home!
An amzing book with something a little bit different

I was persuaded to buy this book from our local store by Richard Johnson's wonderful illustrations. My daughter and I had already enjoyed Mr. Pirotta's Turtle Bay before and we knew he wrote beautifully about animals. His latest work, however, far suprpasses anything he has done before. The animals in these stories come vividly to life. The sense of humour is excllent. A must for all lovers of fables and folktales.
A truly wonderful and original take on classic Aesop

This is an excellent book by Saviour Pirotta who specialises in adapting classics for today's kids. I found the text brought a freshness and immediacey to the stories that are so often told in a pat or patronising way. The animals are treated with feeling, as if they were people - surely something Aesop intended in the first place - and the results are often hilarious and certianly always moving. They have become my son's favourite bedtime stories in a very short space of time. This is the first book I have seen which is illustrated by Richard Johnson and they are quite simply breath-taking. He has a brilliant future ahead of him.
