Writing this memoir has given me the opportunity to rediscover those people and events in my long life that I treasure. Each of my stories, the happy, the challenging, and the sad ones have a special significance for me. My hope is that they may resonate with some of your experiences. My life has been full and rich beginning in Indonesia in 1941 when I was born into a loving family. World War II was still going on and before I was five years old I had an interaction with some Japanese soldiers that was one of my first of several brushes with death. I'm not sure why I escaped death so many times, but for some mysterious reason I am still here to tell my tale or tales! In any case, I have always had a curious and independent nature. To satisfy these tendencies, I would often wander off without letting anyone know where I was going, much to the consternation of my relatives. I was seldom afraid and perhaps should have been more so at times. Growing up close to nature and learning about its inhabitants from insects to deer and large animals nurtured me a great deal. And having lived in several countries and having learned many languages has provided an understanding of the variety of ways we humans live our lives. My relationships with my family, employers, direct reports, women and children have all taught me about myself and guided me in my life choices. As you read this memoir, you will find places where I am describing a particular time but then am triggered by it to another time in my life, and I follow that trail. Therefore, the stories are not necessarily in chronological order. I have tried to note these lapses, and I also rely on the reader's patience in accompanying me and my meandering mind. I hope that my experiences inspire you to live as fully as possible and not to take anything for granted. In other words, Make use of every day in your life.
