Advances in Nanotechnology and Applications

Present day nanotechnology is an emerging field. It is highly multi-disciplinary in nature and it employs many different scientific specialties such as physics, chemistry, biology, and materials sciences. As generally acknowledged, the concept of nanotechnology originated in recent days in 1959 after the talk of Richard Feynman, but the actual "nanotechnology" word was coined by Norio Taniguchi in 1974. The impetus to understanding the importance and applications of nanotechnology was received only after the development of scanning tunneling microscope and atomic force microscope and developments in interface and colloid sciences. This book is published by Center for Nanotechnology Education, Research & Applications (CENTERA). It is a collection of research papers and abstracts presented at the Second Annual Nanotechnology Symposium in 2009, in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Sullivan University College of Pharmacy and CENTERA are contributing its efforts in developing nanotechnology in Kentucky and Midwest area. The first chapter discusses the application of nano Curcumin, a naturally-occurring material found to be effective in the treatment of chronic diseases including neurodegenerative. The second chapter discusses liposomes and nano-niosomes applications for the treatment of iron overload. Chapter nine addresses the applications of delivery of herbal extracts and Nutraceuticals using nanotechnology. The third and fourth chapters deal with the designing and targeting bi specific anti HER -2 immuno-nano-particles for breast cancer cells. Chapters Five to seven deal with various applications of nano-particulate drug delivery systems. Chapters 10 to 13 deal non medicine applications including cerium fullerenes, nano-structured solar devices, grapheme nano-materials characterization, and electronic nose technology. Chapter 14 addresses the educational aspect of introducing nanotechnology at elementary education program.
