This book covers the area of advanced ceramic composites broadly, providing important introductory chapters to fundamentals, processing, and applications of advanced ceramic composites. Within each section, specific topics covered highlight the state of the art research within one of the above sections. The organization of the book is designed to provide easy understanding by students as well as professionals interested in advanced ceramic composites. The various sections discuss fundamentals of nature and characteristics of ceramics, processing of ceramics, processing and properties of toughened ceramics, high temperature ceramics, nanoceramics and nanoceramic composites, and bioceramics and biocomposites.
It is not enough to be culturally literate to be a part of the world nowadays. You do not need to be a rocket scientist, but it would help. That may be stretching it a bit, but a good background in structural ceramics is a plus in how one views today’s world. This is a good book to start with. I know it says advanced; however, the beginning chapters will bring you up to speed.
The book is in textbook form, and there is a color picture section. The references are at the end of each section instead of at the back of the book. We do, however, have the standard index. The diagrams are useful to adjust at the time when you need them. There are a few chemical formulas, but not as many as you would expect; the book takes enough time to explain them, so you do not need external references. I was familiar with a lot of the subjects of the book, except for biomaterials.
Without too much detail, the sections are:
Section 1, on the fundamentals
Section 2, Synthesis of purity powders; sintering mechanism; thermomechanical processing
Section 3, surface coatings
Section 4, advanced tough ceramics
Section 5, high-temperature ceramics
Section 6, Nanoceramic composites.
Section 7, biomedical applications
Just a side note on the section on the history of ceramics they overlooked that at one time they made ceramic money (Notgeld). Now ceramics make money.
Even if you are not going into the industry or are a student, this still makes a great reference book and is an eye-opener as to where the industry is today.
