After 9 months, I'm still thumbing through this book...

I bought this book about 9 months ago to help me do the Java 2 Developer Certification. It provides an excellent reference to help you write programs using almost any networking technology. I still refer to it when I need to write any sort of networking program. Buy this book, trust me... you will never look at any of the networking tutorials on java.sun.com again.

It really is an Intro to Advanced topics

I think the reviews for this book are too harsh in that they repeatedly refer to it as a disappointing "Advanced" book. What it really is is an introduction to advanced networking topics, and as such, it does an excellent job! This shouldn't be your only reference for writing network applications -- with such wide coverage, how could it be? -- but if you need an easy-to-read and thorough INTRODUCTION to the complex networking technologies, Sridharan's book does a better job than any of the O'Reilly books! The author is clear about his intentions in his Introduction to the book, and he follows through on his promises. What more could you ask for?

Excellent primer on Java and Networking Technologies

Prashant has written an excellent primer on networking and middleware technologies. As a fellow author, it is refreshing to find a read which is knowledgable in the high level issues of multi-tier architectural design in addition to Java networking technologies (CORBA, RMI, Sockets, etc). Prashant shares my vision that a multi-tier architecture is key to maintaining scalability, manageability, performance, and flexibility; regardless of your choice of communications middleware. He covers both the techniques and the reasons for choosing one over the other. I recommend this book as a great intermediate introduction to the topic
