Outstanding Collection

For many of us, adapting our pedagogy from a focus on traditional students to a focus on adult learners is a challenge. I found this collection of essays to be an outstanding foundation for understanding how and why we face challenges with adult students. I also got a lot out of the specific practices that make up the second half of the book. I highly recommend the book to those who have not been trained in this form of pedagogy, but who desire to adapt to become a better instructor.

Good text

This is an excellent text for adult education. I just started working on my MEd, and this book covers theory very well, while keeping the subject matter interesting. Chapters are of decent, readable length and are well annotated by both classic and contemporary education specialists.

A 'must-read' for all adult educators

Being fairly new to the community of adult educators, I find myself continually searching for works that might help me to become a more effective facilitator. In this regard, Galbraith has quickly evolved into one of my favorite authors/editors in the field of adult learning. I found this book to be very practitioner-oriented, scholarly yet not over-technical and well researched. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to develop a greater understanding of adult learners and instructional strategies that are, indeed, effective.

An anthology of useful essays

Now in its third edition with revisions, updates, and six new chapters, Adult Learning Methods: A Guide For Effective Instruction compiled and edited by Michael W. Galbraith is an anthology of useful essays by experienced educators and filled from cover to cover with tips, tricks, and techniques for instructors in adult learning classrooms. General enough to apply to all walks of adult instruction ranging from literacy to apprenticeship to community college to advanced schooling, the contributory essays comprising Adult Learning Methods focus especially on assimilating general principles and tested techniques to facilitate learning and is very highly recommended reading for anyone charged with the task of educating adults.

An Excellent Book for Teachers of Adult Education

Michael Galbraith has done an outstanding job of compiling written work by several noted authors and making it available in one book. Rita Kolody focuses on Guidelines for Selecting Methods and Techniques. Gary Conti has written an excellent chapter on Identifying Your Teaching Style. Stephen Brookfield's focus in on Discussion. Shirley Farrah spotlights the Lecture. Internship is covered by Susan B. Fremont and Mentorship is covered by Laurnet A. Parks Daloz. Many other authors have contributed equally outstanding chapters. A major theme of this book is understanding the adult learner. Psychological characteristics are explored as well as cognitive and personality characteristics of the adult learner. The chapters are well written, easily understood, and references are documented. Upon reading this book, the teacher can utilize the knowledge from each contributing author and make an informed selection of which method and technique may have the greatest chance of professional satisfaction for success for the learners. The information in this book is thought-provoking and stimulating for any teacher who desires to improve his/her own teaching-learning transaction.
