In mid-August of 1862, Adrian Ebell with his assistant Edwin Lawton, traveled to Minnesota to photograph Indians. On Sunday, August 17th, near Acton, Minnesota, the first attacks of the 1862 Dakota Conflict began and with those attacks, settlers on the western frontier fled east to safety. In "People Escaping from the Indian Massacre. Dinner on the Prairie, Thursday, August 21st, 1862" photograped the large group of settlers, missionaries, and Indian agency employees fleeing with him. This image is believed to be the only image photographed during this war. Returning to the frontier with General Henry Hastings Sibley and his troops, Ebell, with the rank of 1st Lieutenant, fought against the Dakota soldiers and aided in the rescue of the hundreds of captives taken by them. His recollections were originally published by Harper's in June of 1863. This edition is a faithful reproduction of that original edition. Adrian Ebell's photograph from August 21, 1862, serves as the cover art.
