must have for all web designers

This is a fantastic book. Probably the best book in my collection. This isn't just a book full of tutorials for people to rip off. It provides a great deal of insight on web design. After reading this book you will always be able to come up with just the right look for your site. This book not only provides insight on how to come up with just the right look for your site but an in-depth look at file types, file sizes, vector graphics, web safe colors, and modem transfer speeds. This is a must have book for any serious web designer. Nice job Michael Baumgardt.

Pretty but impractical in its 'coding' suggestions

The graphics are inspiring and it is a pleasure to leaf through; the information on web graphic formats and the LZW compression algorithm, as well as web-safe colour and other graphical considerations when designing for the web, are very useful. You must actually want to know this stuff, though, or it'll seem extremely dry. However, it is obvious why this book is printed by Adobe Press: although Photoshop is the Holy Grail of the digital graphics world, GoLive is not so great, and one should take Baumgardt's raving enthusiasm for designing entire layouts of sites in Photoshop, ImageReady and GoLive with several grains of salt.

The ultimate book for web designing !!

This book fully describes all aspects of web designing, using the programs: Photoshop 6, Imageready 3 and Golive 5. (sometimes other programs like Illustrator are also mentioned). To give an idea of some of the topics: browser differences, websafe colours, gif/jpg/png differences, Golive, Photoshop techniques, tips and tricks. How to start with a website like structuring, interfaces, navigation etc. And it even has a chapter about embedding video and audio into webpages. The book consists of a nice layout, and describes how the latest websites around today's web are made.It even goes beyond web designing and shows you how to use Photoshop as a graphical tool,(filters, masks) for web designing.Even a 'newbie' (some experience with Photoshop and Golive might be handy), can easily find his/her way in this book.A FULL tutorial which take you step by step through the WHOLE proces of web designing,(from photoshop usage to using Golive to create generated HTML pages) makes this book a real must buy, for both Win and Mac users !!'creativity', is the only thing you must add to you web site because it is not described in the book, but the rest can ALL be found in this book !!

Great book, with many tips for the web design

This is a great book if you want to know about colors to be used in a web bitmap picture. The coverage on the JPEG and GIF formats is quite comprehensive, and mainly how to take advantage with these formats. Baumgardt takes a while to discuss PNG format but I didn't feel confident in using this format, as it doesn't seem to be widely used. The chapters on web-safe colors are also quite clear, and very useful. I also found the discussion on avoiding distasful haloes very useful. Tips on photo adjustements were interesting though not quite new to me. I must say I've got already some books on Photoshop, though definetely I'm not an advanced user. The included interviews with some highly experienced web designers can always tell you new points.Summing up, this is not a book to teach you how to open or to save a file, or nor how to apply eady made filters, though its section on Candy Eye is interesting. You should have already read a basic photoshop book, or the manuals... But have a look in this one. It is worth it.

Great work!

The best books that I have seen for Photoshop are ones that are written by designers who are well versed in computer technology, rather than the other way round - web programmers who knows computers/software very well but are amateurs to design. This book is definately one of the former.I have been creating web contents (using Photoshop :-) for 6 years yet I still find the book immensely helpful and interesting to read. The books covers a wide variety of subjects from concrete issues such as the compression algorithms of the graphics formats and its real life relevance to with regard to color management, down to the intricacies of web design through interviews with top class web designers and looking at other people's work. While this book may not be for you if you're new to Web design and Photoshop you definately must take a look if you know about the subject already and are looking for professional ideas as well as answers, or you're familier with Photoshop and ready to explore the new capabilities with the latest version of PS/ ImageReady/GoLive.
