This special issue celebrates the 10-year existence of the International Collaboration on ADHD and Substance Abuse (ICASA) Foundation. It covers a selection of the most prominent issues on this topic, including a review of the epidemiological work the ICASA Foundation has conducted. The papers presented show the high prevalence of adult ADHD in patients seeking treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), the influence of comorbid SUD on the severity of SUD, the developmental trajectories of ADHD and conduct disorder to SUD. The role of cognitive testing in screening and diagnosis of ADHD in SUD patients is also discussed and presented in a consensus statement. Furthermore, this special issue provides information about the role of comorbid ADHD in polydrug use and its association with traumatic experiences and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder. This issue will be of great interest to both scientists and clinicians, including child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists. They will benefit from the insights because childhood ADHD and conduct disorder are important risk factors/precursors for early substance abuse and the development of SUD. If not detected, diagnosed and properly treated at an early stage, they will have a negative influence on the course and outcome of SUD.
