I received an advance copy around Christmas of Addict at 10. As a general rule it takes me a while to become engaged in a book. However, as I read this book I did not stop until I finished it. I had no issues with the writing style because the story was incredibly captivating. This book is relevant to anyone that has ever lost their way. More importantly, the reader gets a chance to see first hand that there are no obstacles too big to overcome in life. When you take the first step, God has already made two. Excellent read!
Truth and Inspiration

Excellent! Addict at Ten is an easy read and an important ray of hope for an addicted America. Derek Steele not only tells an all-too-familiar story of the nightmares of drug addiction, he gives a solid picture of the recovery process... not the pop psychology blather so commonly heard, but real solid transformation. The final punch of the book is a hard-learned lesson for Derek as a recovered addict and is one that applies to any breathing human being. That lesson sets this book apart from so many of those that chronicle the recovery process. This book is full of truth and inspiration for anyone touched by addiction or anyone who just plain cares about those who suffer from it.
Powerful, riveting, and a bit uncomfortable in a good way.

What a great book. Although I felt very uncomfortable during the first half of the book when Derek is addressing his home life, or lack thereof, the drug experimentation and then, the extremes that he would go to to get his next fix, I was uplifted and inspired when he started detailing the steps he took to reverse these challenges. While uncomfortable, it was also riveting to get to look inside the mind of an addict. How lucky for us that Derek had enough brain cells left to communicate these thoughts in a very powerful way. I felt like Derek was sitting in my living room and talking directly to me. The good parts inspired me. The bad parts reminded me of how close I was to being in the same drug infested world of which Derek came.
Could Not Put it Down!

What an inspirational read this was. I read the entire book in less than a day because I simply could not set it down. I found it fascinating and poweful. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone, whether you are battling addiction, know someone who has at one time battled addictions, or just want to read a story about the triumph of the human spirit and how God works in peoples' lives to help them overcome the odds. Terrific and well-written book.
Real. Honest. Determination.

With all due respect, I actually disagree with the review about the writing style of this book and would whole-heartedly suggest this book is a great read. Here's why: If you're looking for perfection of the written word, you won't find it here because the book isn't written in a complex, ultra-fluid style. But I honestly believe the message would not have carried in the same way-- nor with the same efficiency-- if it was. The whole message of this book is in alignment with its writing style, which is a truthful, often chaotic, message about what it is really like to walk in the depths of an addict's mind. It carries across the critical element of how the incredible circumstances of addiction at age 10 can even happen, and how it can evolve into something so huge that it impacts the lives of countless others. It does a superb job of letting the reader "feel" the emotion, the distance from the world, the isolation, the chaos, the confusion, the desperation. And then it goes on to illustrate the process of recovery in a way that I would imagine it to be-- an ongoing battle, a struggle, a process that is never ending. I am so glad I've read it and would absolutely recommend this book to others. In this world, a real, honest view of the human struggle is a big deal. And this one is a big deal.
