37 years old and single again in Knoxville, Tennessee, Sandy Underwood was determined to begin living her life on her own terms; a life that would be new, and challenging, and above all interesting. Far away would be good, too. Preferably some place that was known to be more open-minded than her hometown had proven to be. She decided to drive her little Volkswagen camper van to visit her parents in Williamsburg, Virginia, then from there she would set out to drive across the entire country, going from one campground to another, until she reached the Pacific coast. When Sandy made it to Seattle, Washington, she felt that she had achieved the first big step in her new life. However, when she called her parents to announce her achievement, her mother said, "Why don't you go the rest of the way to Alaska? After all, you're halfway there." Well, maybe not half way, or even anywhere close to that, but the idea was intriguing. So the decision was made. Alaska won her heart immediately, and she knew she was home at last. Sandy decided to take herself on at least one big Alaska Adventure every year as long as she lived there. With her newly developed sense of independence and adventure, she easily met her goal. This is her story.
