After the journey with its costly passage to the place I was going, I found myself back where I started. At some point the idea of home settled out of thin air again into the old idea of a place, and that old place-having changed, of course-counted enough of the unknown it could play the next unexplored location on the map. I can't say for certain, but I guess it wasn't on purpose that events conspired to bring me here. The big coincidence of the universe is that fate and chance keep running into each other and saying, ""Wow, small world."" Fate is real but meaningless. We know all about chance. So no matter what you call it, it was beyond my control. The shape of things was I chased my tail and caught it. Also, I keep meaning to do one thing and another thing happens instead. Not to mention all the things that happen along the way, the unintended consequences even of the things I don't mean to do. I keep making the accidents into books and pretending they were part of the plan from the beginning.
