In the year 2136, climate change and global conflict have brought human life on Earth to the edge of destruction. But a few hardy and miserable souls survive, including Canaan and Danya Reed, and their two-year-old son, Sam-whose health is rapidly deteriorating. His parents find new hope, however, when a drifter tells them stories of Strata, a mysterious underground city where technology and order survive. The Reed family sets out from the coast of Washington and heads toward Strata's supposed location in the mountains of Idaho. After surviving a treacherous journey, the Reeds reach Strata and are integrated into its peaceful, ordered society. Canaan and Danya are sure they've found a safe new home. But life in Strata isn't as blissful as it first appears, and soon the Reeds have invoked the wrath of the authoritarian Hall family. As civil war erupts five thousand feet below the Earth's blighted surface, Canaan and Danya decide to forgo their false subterranean safe haven and make the treacherous journey back to the surface. No one is allowed to leave Strata, however, and the Halls don't plan on allowing Canaan, Danya, and little Sam to be the first successful escapees.
