The worship song "Above All," performed by Michael W. Smith, went quickly from its #1 spot on radio playlists to a cherished place in hearts, homes, and worship services everywhere. Now the words that millions have been singing will bear fresh fruit as one of Christianity's most insightful and trusted authors personalizes the biblical truths in each phrase of the song.
This is quite different from Brennan's other books. I've read most of them, and credit him with playing a major role in saving my life during an especially dark period. The Rabbi's Heartbeat, Patched Together, Abba's Child, A Glimpse of Jesus, etc have become the book's I keep close, and run to when I need refreshing and reminding.
This one takes a side step in the middle and takes on what we egocentric humans have done to Jesus in projecting our own biases, cultural concepts, hypocrisies, because the real Jesus of Scripture falls outside our illusions and delusions. Brennan is right, of course, and I am thankful to see this expounded upon, starting with the Pascal quote, "God made man in his own image, and man returned the compliment."
"Religion has petrified compassion." (Manning)
We worship the golden calf, its attendant embodiments of weather and power, the sub-idols , as we gloss over, excuse and rationalize the unfathomable evil it has promulgated, allowing ourselves to be put to sleep on pontificating, political pablum laced with sugar-coated heresy, blasphemy and hypocrisy, while ignoring the suffering of the helpless. Ignore the victims.
This is the strongest I've heard Brennan speak out against the church and religion. I only wish those who need to hear it, would hear it.
But, alas, human history repeats itself.

I found 'Above All' a wonderful read, and perfect in length. A rather short read and amazing personal insights from Manning to the reader. To reach the point as to where Brennan is in faithfulness with Abba and his will to spread it as he sees it is unique and powerful! I think I'll re-read it again ... and again ....
