A 5 star rating is not enough for this superb novel and that's from a hard headed realist (moi), who has no time for novels, which I generally find to be as tedious as they are vacuous. For instance, while I could read and reread Tolstoy's "Slavery of Our Times," or Aristophanes', "The Knights," and "Lysistrata," I just could not plow through "War and Peace." I was never able to make it, cringing all the way, past the first party. BORING! This sparkling novel is the opposite. I made and stole time from my frenetic schedule to read it and could barely put it down. It's obviously the product of extensive and meticulous research and the result is an endless collection of delightful surprises delivered with a mastery of the language as vivid as The Bard's himself.
I know that sounds over the top, but I'm serious.
