The abbey of San Giovanni in Venere is one of the spectacular examples of Benedictine architecture preserved in Abruzzo. It is a complex, composed of a church and monastery, located in an isolated position on a hill called promontory of Venus, dominating the homonymous gulf and a wonderful landscape that winds from the green of the Maiella to the Adriatic coast. The building is the result of a long and complex artistic and historical process that would have ancient origins. On the site where the abbey stands today there must have been a pagan temple dedicated to the cult of the goddess Venus Conciliatrice, whose birth would certainly be no earlier than the time of Caesar or Augustus, promoters of the cult of Venus in Rome.
