This book is divided into nine sections and contains a report covering the conception, development, and progress of the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). The history begins from when the idea of the Africa CDC was first conceptualized, in December 2012. To help readers grasp the content more easily, the narrative is presented using a visual and descriptive style.
There are many reasons that led me to write and present the historical account of Africa CDC's development. Among the key motivations are the following:
First: Since I actively participated in the process of Africa CDC's formation, I believe it is a historical responsibility to present what I saw, heard, and experienced-comprehensively and with evidence. I share this not for personal fame or gain, but with the hope that it will help future generations for research and reflection.
Second: Although it's not widely practiced in Ethiopia, I strongly believe it is essential to document such significant generational milestones in the field of public health.
As is widely recognized, Africa-including our country, Ethiopia-is blessed with abundant natural resources and a youthful population. If Africa acts with unity and vision, it has the potential to rise quickly from its current challenges. Therefore, establishing shared institutions not only through the African Union politically, but also through health, education, resource management, and disaster prevention, is essential. I believe we've reached a point where such collective protection mechanisms must be established.
In this regard, with health being one of the pillars of a united Africa, Ethiopia's efforts to initiate the establishment of Africa CDC-by organizing consultations and presenting decisions to member states-have helped to bring the idea of Africa CDC to reality. Ethiopia has made history by launching the long journey with determination.
This book summarizes the decade-long journey of Africa CDC, the situations it has faced, and the next steps ahead. Readers will understand how deeply complex institutional building can be, especially for a continental body like Africa CDC, and how many unexpected challenges can arise even with the best intentions. Through reading this book, I hope readers will see how reflection, analysis, and collective effort are vital in facing such realities.
Though the journey began with noble intentions, it was not without its hardships. Unforeseen situations, doubts, and surprises emerged along the way. This book presents those stories-the struggles, the research, the faith, the cooperation, and the lessons-so readers can grasp what is truly required to do meaningful work in our world.
The story of Africa CDC is the result of the tireless efforts and sacrifices of many people. Therefore, I've ensured that the names of individuals, government officials, and other stakeholders who played a role in this history are included to preserve their contributions for posterity.
