God's purification process of refining us like gold causes impurities to come to the surface to be skimmed off. "He is like a blazing fire refining precious metal, and he can bleach the dirtiest garment. Like a refiner of silver he will sit and closely watch as the dross is burned away. He will purify the ministers of God, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may do their work with pure hearts" (Malachi 3:2-3). "The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the Lord tests the heart" (Proverbs 17:3). "See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction" (Isaiah 48:10).
