Weaving a tale of love and tragedy set in Beirut in the 1960s and 70s, this story depicts the life of a young Palestinian woman from Nazareth who defies her family's strict traditional values and leaves the protective circle of her refugee community to discover the world beyond its borders.
Another page turner. A Must read. Also Educational.

When you read this book, you will live scenes from the lives of the extremely rich Arab and the extremely poor Arab, the very opressed Arab and the totally liberal Arab. You will cry for the heavy human suffering and you will rise with the genuine call for peace, but above all, you will know what it means to live your life in search of your identity as a woman and as a Palestinian. Very insightful, educational and very well written.
Gripping, Emotional, Insightful. . . A very good read.

With all of the confusion going on in the Middle East for the past half century it seems an unlikely setting for a love story of human triumph. Hala Deeb Jabbour has transformed the magnificent setting of the Middle East and the Palestinian Diaspora into a wonderful tale of love, human triumph and heroic beings. This story is a thoroughly entertaining and emotional one while being extremely educational. It will give you a different perspective of the situations in this troubled part of the world. You will see the problems, trials and tribulations from the perspective of real people whom you can identify with, rather than TV sound bites, and one-sided editorials. A Woman of Nazareth changes the Middle East from a chaotic mess of geo-political melodrama to a human story, about the triumph of heroic human beings. You will see the world through the eyes of Amal, a heroin that is a feminist despite her oppresive culture. She will show you life from the perspective of a woman who rises to the status of human hero against all odds. You will never see the Middle East, or the third world the same way ever again. It will excite you, teach you and make you feel that humnaity has a hope for greatness despite what you see on the prime time news.
