This small book by Susan Burrows Swan is packed with pictures, history, and stitches used on 117 items within the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. Ms. Swan includes chapters on samplers, canvas work, crewel embroidery, silk work, quilts, tambour work, knitting, white work, and less common needlework forms such as hatchments and coats of arms, bed rugs, and sailor's embroidery. In this book are works rarely seen such as bilaterally arched canvas work of a woman spinning yarn, hand fire screen, crewel embroidered tea kettle holder, quilted petticoat, knitted silk sewing case from 1814, and so very much more. The works discussed are from 1650-1890 and although most of the pictures are black and white the detail is still remarkable. Certainly any serious 17th - 19th century needlework connoisseur would want this book in her reference library. Whatever you pay for this book you will be very pleased.
