Filled with thoughtful suggestions

A Wind Swept Over the Waters is the kind of book that you put on the nightstand to read just before falling asleep, or when you wake in the night. John Nichols presents 60 passages from the Bible, but rather than trying to tell the reader what they mean, he uses them as a launching point to talk about how they reveal God and ourselves. This is the kind of book that can be read over and over, each time finding some new gem. For the most part John Nichols works through the passages in the order that they appear in the Bible. He starts with Creation in Genesis and moves forward through Bible. I found all his selections thoughtful, if not always what I would have chosen. His meditations on the passages were well thought out, but not so specific that people in different situations wouldn't all find them helpful. Armchair Interviews says: This little book is definitely worth picking up and reading.

Thought for the Day.

I picked this small book up on a recent visit to the US. I didn't know what to expect, but discovered it filled with ideas and opinions about the author's favourite Bible passages. John Nichols views are put succinctly, written delightfully and I found them easy to embrace. He leans on other faiths in interpreting both the Testaments, and even when I didn't always agree with his interpretations, I found them stimulating. I particularly enjoyed the extracts from Exodus. Nichols' book is one to savour, to keep by a bedside or in a bag, to dip into whenever you need insight and inspiration. Michael Dobbs, England.
