A Widow's Song

Noella had always dreamed of the day she'd find love. The day she would use the binders of notes and fabric clippings to create a start to her fairytale. Daniel offered her just that. Anguish.

Thick snow billowing around me stained in crimson red, a reminder of who had come from the woods. Their cruelty created a cavity of disappearing, hatred, and self-doubt. Had it really happened? Had their words been true? I ask myself these things all the while knowing the answers may never reveal themselves to me. For some, they turn to God asking him for strength, or cursing him and begging to understand why.
Me, I didn't turn to God. I turned to the men who pulled me into their world of safety. They are the angels in the dark. My shadowed protectors. Even so, I ask myself the same question with every breath.
