Hidden away in the heart of Creighton University is a place known to the Faculty and Students of the university as "Jesuit Gardens". Yet at another time the same area was known to the author and a few select friends as "Butter Brickle Forest". It was a place to escape the structured grid of streets separating houses constructed on small lots near downtown Omaha, Ne. Butter Brickle Forest was a place where a boy could imagine being enclosed by a wilderness not unlike that experienced by the first pioneers to settle in America. The period ranges from 1955 to 1964 corresponding to the author's attendance at St. John's Grade School which was also located in the heart of the Creighton University Campus. The Sisters of Mercy ran the school, although any student misbehaving was likely to receive little mercy.
