I read this book several months after spending two weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Stanford with my newborn daughter, who passed away after being born severely brain damaged. The book validated so much of what I had been feeling about my family's experience. The authors bravely tackle some of the most difficult and controversial issues I can imagine, and they do it with eloquence and grace. I only wish there were an updated edition that covered some of the changes in politics, the law, and medical technology that have occurred in the past 20 years. Even so, the book does not feel dated to me. Most of what is covered is just as relevant today as it was when the book was published, two decades ago. I am so grateful that the authors of this book dared to write it; it has helped me with my healing process as I continue to grieve the loss of my beautiful child.
