The Jewish community existed in Iraq for 2500 years, and had largely been educated and prosperous. Things took a turn for the worse in the 1940s when they began to be systematically oppressed. The author recounts the story of a Jewish family through the eyes of a school-age girl, Evelyn. After her father dies, Evelyn, her mother and two sisters, having only mild income, must go live with their in-laws. Evelyn's mother has the added load of trying to find matches for her three daughters in the hard to navigate Jewish marriage market. A girl at that time was a burden; the earlier married, the better. And how will she afford a dowry? All the while, anti-Semitism is rising, as Israel is about to declare statehood.
