This text provides an insight into Ernst's sketch journal, in which readers can watch her teach, reflect on her observations, and see samples of her students' pictures and writing. Ernst shows how to link art with reading, writing and learning in the classroom.
The title doesn't do justice to this masterpiece on art and writing. It is so much more than the title implies and should be required reading in methods classes on art and writing. In A Teacher's Sketch Journal: Observations on Learning and Teaching, Karen Ernst makes the connection between visual art and writing, drawing on the writer's workshop method. The result is a powerful synergy that compelled me to change my philosophy of art education and classroom practice after twenty five years. I found out what my students were thinking and feeling about their art that I hadn't been able to observe from their pictures. My students have grown from mere manipulators of media to thinking and responding artists and writers. They have a better understanding of the creative process and confidently own their work. I continue to be astonished and refreshed by her approach. Karen Ernst has found the missing piece to art education. Bravo!
