Geneva and Hayse were the daughters of an American father and an Irish immigrant mother. When their mother died with Hayse at the age of three, Geneva, at the age of ten, became her mother for a while. Eventually they were separated into their father's house and their mother's maiden family. Their closeness never dimmed through many adventures and in spite of growing up in two different households. Both were exposed to the Irish struggles to gain freedom from the British government and the times they lived through in the American twentieth century. These were women of hardship, love, heritage, independence, and family.
