The goal here is to tell the tales of two storied fires in La Crosse, Wisconsin history, one at St. Rose Convent and one at Lutheran Hospital. Spectacular blazes they were, the tension heightened by the vulnerability of the potential victims. Both fires were in the winter, winters of discontent. St. Rose was on a midday Sunday in December, and the hospital fire on a February night nearly forty years later. The fires involved two organizations that have had, and continue to have, a deep impact on our lives in this area, the FSPA sisters and the family Gundersen.
