A Study of Prospects and Problems of Smart Card in India

Smart card has played a pivotal role in changing our lives during the last decade and continues to do so. It has helped in spreading the mobile telecommunication to the remotest of location and has been instrumental in being a technological enabler for the underprivileged and marginalized population. Biometric integrated smart cards with handheld readers are being used today in the villages to provide mobile banking solutions. The government is implementing a sizable number of e-governance and social engineering projects like RSBY wherein the smart card plays a pivotal role. Smart cards are emerging in India and other global market as an important technological enabler; the developments in this field motivated me to undertake this study. In this thesis the present market scenario, important smart card based project and

the future directions of smart car applications are discussed. A technology however good or path breaking can only succeed if and only if it is accepted and adopted by the user. Thus consumer acceptance and adoption are vital for the further growth of smart card technology. In order to understand this subject, a smart card adoption model is also developed and evaluated in this study. The study has been organized into eight chapters. The first chapter provides a general overview of smart cards, its characteristics, features, along with a brief review of literature. It also includes research methodology, objectives of the study and plan of work. The second chapter covers the prevailing standards and platforms related to smart card. The third chapter deals with the security, lifecycle and other related issues. In the fourth chapter important Indian smart card projects are discussed. The fifth chapter deals with the present and future application segments of smart card. The socio-economic impact of smart card is studied in chapter six. The empirical study of the respondents' perception is studied in chapter seven. Finally in chapter eight, the concluding observations and recommendations are made along with scope for further research and limitations of the study.
