Luckily having access to a Formula Ford 1600 race car gave an opportunity to see whether the aerodynamic performance of a Ray GR07 can be improved, reducing the vehicles drag within the regulations. Reducing the drag would help improve top speed, acceleration and overall lap time, creating a much more competitive car. A goal was set to reduce the drag by 10% from the original design. This study goes through the background of a single seater design with regards to aerodynamics, methods and theories around aerodynamics, building a model of the Formula Ford on Computer Aided Design software (CAD (Soildworks)), testing on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, results and validating these results with a 3D printed model of the CAD model in a scale wind tunnel. The results may surprise you...
