A Study In Scarlet (Annotated)

This edition of Sherlock Holmes, No 1, A Study In Scarlet from Chewana Books offers the reader a distinct perspective on the classic tale with a look at:

Why the author wrote the bookWho inspired the character of Sherlock HolmesWas Sherlock Holmes actually a real detective? How the book relates to then current events in Victorian LondonAnd more...

A Study In Scarlet, the first in the Sherlock Holmes Series, introduced Sherlock Holmes to the world. Holmes, along with his good friend Dr. Watson, would become the dynamic duo in crime fiction. This book set the standard for aspiring detectives as well as mystery authors.

Sherlock Holmes is probably the most famous detective in history-real or fictional. His powers of observation and deduction are legendary. His iconic image portrays the quintessential depiction of a detective.

A Study In Scarlet follows Holmes and Watson on their investigation of an intriguing murder of a man in London. The victim is found with the word Rache (Revenge in German) written on the wall in blood. The story then switches settings as the two travel to the American West, revealing the back story, which involves a love triangle and a divergence within the Mormon community of Utah. Holmes uses his observation and deductive skills to expose the killer's motive and eventually solve the case.

Quote from the book-

"What you do in this world is a matter of no consequence. The question is what can you make people believe you have done."

― Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet

Interesting trivia tid-bit: "Elementary, my dear Watson," is perhaps the most well-known phrase of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The only problem is, that phrase never actually appears in any of the manuscripts written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Caveat; Holmes did often use the word "elementary" to describe his deductions and did address Watson as "my dear Watson," but he never combined the two into a single phrase.
