Rare

Engberg's short stories gently and certainly open the reader's heart and stay. Given to no histrionics (no explosive devices, dementia, dysfunction), they inhabit domestic sites and move with the pace of our lives. I've encountered no other short story writer so adept at valuing the power of the ordinary. The cumulative effect of reading her feels like reading Malamud. Even Cather. Her devotion to the great good in us is that true.
