A Special Tree

Just before Christmas, eight-year-old Mary visits her grandfather in the hospital, dragging a small Christmas tree and a box of ornaments she found in the attic. While her granddad sleeps, Mary puts the tree together and decorates it with some of the most precious and special ornaments she could find. She tops the tree with a time-worn angel holding a candle. It's the first artificial tree her grandfather has ever had, and it will probably be the last one he ever sees. No matter how many ornaments Mary puts on the tree, there are always small, dark places left between them. Those empty spots between the ornaments and the lights and the tinsel are portals, granddad explains when he wakes up, surprised and awed by his special tree. And then he tells Mary the most wonderful, magical story she's ever heard about those dark, empty places between the lights.
