Annie Glenn was free spirited and beautiful. Before she was brutally murdered, she sang with a rock band at a bar in the small town of Dudley, Arizona and broke some hearts. Annie's live-in boyfriend Kurt was charged with her murder and found not guilty. Seventeen years later, the long decomposed body of another member of Annie's band is found buried behind a house in Dudley. Annie's daughter Rachel, now in her twenties and still not fully recovered from the trauma of finding her mother's body, must deal with new memories dredged up by the discovery, memories from long ago that may put her in danger. She hires former Cochise County Sheriff's detective Brian Flynn, now a private investigator, to look into the case. Flynn in turn lures his longtime lover-adversary Chloe Newcombe away from her job as a victim advocate to help with the investigation. Nominated for the Simon-Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, this is the sixth in the Newcombe series and one of the best.
There are many things I loved about this book. Start with that cover! That, and the vivid descriptions of Dudley, AZ made me want to rush to the bordertown on which it is based, Bisbee, AZ. The setting overall was great: a mining town turned artists' colony, filled with desert details. The plot is also very strong: a string of murders of some bohemian types, including two members of a band. The pace moves along quickly, and the crimes are plausible and interesting. There were a few things I didn't like, such as overuse of certain details, like descriptions of fennel in the air. There were also ham-fisted attempts at cultural tension, such as the liberal/Republican divide between two love interests. Also needed: more resolution about the crimes. We find out the motive but little else about them. I would have liked to know how they happened and when. Overall, though, I LOVED "A Song for You."
Excellent writing and wonderful characters

All of Betsy Thornton's Chloe Newcomb mysteries are great, but A Song for You may be her best yet. Without resorting to lurid sensationalism or outrageous plot devices as so many other mystery writers do, Thornton delivers a taut, suspenseful tale with narrative flare and atmospheric aplomb. If you like a smart, compelling, utterly believable story with plenty of surprises and vividly drawn characters, this song's for you.
exciting private investigative whodunit

Seventeen years ago in Dudley, Arizona, Rachel Macabee comes home to find her mother Annie lying in bed with her face blown away. The police arrested her mom's boyfriend Kurt because he lent Annie Glenn his gun, which turned out to be the murder weapon. Rachel never believed he shot her mom and was pleased when he was acquitted. Except for testifying at his trial, she never returned to Dudley. A nice couple buys a home in Dudley when the monsoon rains ruin a retaining wall. They hire people to dig out the dirt only to find a human skeleton buried there. The remains are identified as Wynn Wyckoff, who performed in the same band as Annie did. Rachel sees the obvious connection and hires private investigator Bryan Flynn to look into her mother's cold case murder. Since he is busy at the moment, his new employee and ex girlfriend, former victim's advocate Chloe Newcombe leads the inquiry; Chloe is leaving the job she loved due to an incompetent interfering political hack new supervisor. They work separately on the case seeking clues to the homicides and hoping they can bring closure to Rachel, who just came home, but remains traumatized after all these years and in spite of the love of her father and her husband. This is an exciting private investigative whodunit enhanced by colorful secondary characters who the readers meet mostly through the inquiries of Chloe and to a degree Bryan especially in Dudley. Although there are too many points of view and the ending seems inadequate, Chloe makes the tale work as she learns on the job how to interview, find clues, and survive; all part of remedial private investigation 099. Fans will enjoy her efforts as her work coupled with Rachel's return to Dudley place both in peril from a clever just out of sight ever watching killer. Harriet Klausner
