Coming out of rural Karnataka, HC Venugopal could not resist the call of independence and abandoned his studies to fight the British. After independence he joined the Indian Army where its values of duty, honour, and service were drilled into him. Later in the Border Security Force, he took on insurgents in the volatile Northeast, fighting them militarily but also through efforts to improve their living conditions in remote, neglected areas. For his efforts he was awarded the Visistha Seva Medal (VSM). This is his story, in his own modest voice. It is a quick read but a must read.
