Rolph and Margaret Mayer have had a profound effect on countless lives. In the early 1940s from the family farm in Queensland, Rolph was sent to school in South Australia to escape anti-German sentiment and went on to become a most popular and effective pastor, teacher and boarding house master. He was principal and lecturer at Lutheran Teachers College in Adelaide where he influenced hundreds of young Christians with his friendliness, interpersonal skills, storytelling, brilliant lectures and sermons, and his love and understanding of the gospel. Margaret was outrageous. An absolute dynamo with a quirky wit and a disarming tendency to mildly shock, Margaret rode motorbikes, made her debut at age 85 as a comedienne at the 2017 Adelaide Fringe, and in 2018 stole the show on Family Feud. Coming from a struggling family farm to become head prefect at Immanuel College in Adelaide, she told wonderful and most often, humorous stories. Rolph and Margaret and their daughters, Susan and Anne, shared their life stories, both triumphs and struggles, openly with Andy Thurlow, who also draws on the memories of over 90 contributors, including relatives, who were eager to share their reflections on this most remarkable and cherished couple.
