Inspector Dantan is a most logical and understated hero

Hannah Blank has a long familiarity with Europe, having lived there in the 1950 as a student, then working with the Army in its Paris finance office. She also lived on Ibiza when it was a pristine place before jet setters invaded. She has degrees in philosophy and operations research. She presently lives in Fairfield County, Connecticut and New York City.Alphonse Dantan, the popular Inspector of the Paris Police Judicare is back with his rich and elegant wife, Judy. The setting is 1955, and the couple travels from Paris to the island of Ibiza to visit their painter friend Miri Winter, who is living there as an artist. When one of the local house maids is found by handsome and educated local Tomas Bonet, and later pronounced dead by the inept local doctor, friends and family fear that the police will look no further. Bribes are made, Tomas remains "safely out of reach" of the police, and Dantan agrees to carry on a quiet investigation of the matter:"Dantan said, 'Naturally I'll do what I can to help, but I must tell you I do not intend to be assertive in any criminal investigation. The local police have not invited me to join any investigation, and I believe they would be justifiably perturbed if I injected myself unofficially. I am here with my wife Judy on vacation, to visit her friend Miri and sightsee. I'll do what I can to help but only whatever I am able to do discreetly and without interfering with the police investigation.'"A Short Life on A Sunny Isle is a remarkably low-key cozy with interesting characters and a lush background. Relationships between the various friends and acquaintances of Miri Winter provide plenty of material for subplots, as well as effectively disguising the real killer until Dantan puts the pieces together. Dantan himself is a honorable man who is in love with his beautiful, generous, and flamboyant wife, who keeps everyone around her comfortable and having fun. The murder, while important, almost fades into the sunny life Blank describes on the island. Her descriptions resemble a paradise, where even the fisherman are interesting and sexy. A Short Life is prime reading material for lazy summer days, and Inspector Dantan is a most logical and understated hero. One can't help liking this series. It is full of sun and fun.Shelley GlodowskiSenior ReviewerMidwest Book Review
