This is a story of two brothers, both linked to the longshoreman community of San Francisco. The story alternates between each's perspective. One brother is a leader in the longshoreman union, and the other is an often-relapsing alcoholic. The story is beautifully written, and is both tragic and uplifting at times. It's a quick and moving read, and certain characteristics of Benet's style are reminiscent of Kerouac. I recommend this book unequivocally
