This guide will improve, expand, and inspire your prayer life for the next 31 days, but more than anything I hope it helps you better understand the unseen God you are talking to. He is the one that gives purpose and meaning to your prayers. He is the one that I hope will be revealed to you with better clarity and tangible power as you journey through the month of prayer contained here. I am a preacher, but I'll admit to you up front that I am no "prayer warrior." I am not one who has spent days fasting and praying, but I believe in prayer, and I believe that I desperately need it to power my life. I need prayer. Without it, I'm on my own, and on my own, I'm not much. That's why I wrote these daily devotionals, as motivators to push past my limited prayer life into areas that I knew, according to the scriptures, were things I should be praying about, or aspects of faith that I needed to explore in my prayers. Others of these are responses to questions about the nature of prayer and how it works or why it at times doesn't. I believe in prayer, but I need to depend on prayer. When my prayer life is better, life goes better. I know that, and yet too often I prefer to be busy instead of being still and listening and waiting on God. Maybe you are like me. As much as you and I believe in prayer, we tend to fall into the same well-worn paths, the same rote lines, the same tired lists of people and problems in our prayers. I know that to improve my prayer life, to expand my horizons and my relationship with the God I pray to, I need to be more intentional. In these devotionals, we'll work through several aspects of prayer: praise, repentance, asking, yielding, and some doctrinal questions that come up about how to pray, or why prayer is sometimes not answered. We'll also spend some time talking about Heaven. That may seem a strange topic for a prayer book, but as you'll see, Heaven should be very real to us in our prayers. Heaven, in fact, is the answer to many of our prayers. Work through these next 31 days of prayer individually or with a group, and good things will happen.
