When Fizzer's football rolls down the cellar steps from the school playground, Zaffar goes to fetch it ' and disappears. As Fizzer and his friends try to discover what has happened to him, they suspect that the school caretaker is not all that he seems. Racial violence in the city has spilled over into the school playground, and the children are soon caught up in a series of events which threaten not only their own safety but also that of their families and the whole neighbourhood.
