A Sharecropper's Daughter

This is a story of a sharecropper's daughter.I was born on August24th, 1946, in Tiptonville, Tennessee, in Lake County in west Tennessee. It is the smallest countyin Tennessee. It sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is a farming community.I was the youngest of six children and grew up in Sommerset, Tenn. Our farmhouse was full. Besides my siblings and me, my parents, my Grandmother Elvan, my Great-Uncle Tom Pierce and Great-Aunt Betty Pierce lived there. My mother and father died within two months of each other in 1950 when I was 4 years old, mother from cancer and father from complications in surgery. The Black community and the White community were segregated. The only time we met up was on Saturday at grocery stores or at the post office, drug stores and places like that.We were friendly to each other but did not socialize. As children we played with each other until cotton age.Life on a farm in the 1950s, 1960s, was hard. First, let me say something about sharecropping. We lived on an 18-acre farm. We did not own it - a Mr. James Pierce (we were not relation to him) was the owner, and I don't know where he lived. But we did all of the farming and received a small portion (a share) of the revenue from the crops and animals and a house to live in. Mr. Pierce got most of the rest.
