A Sensitive Little World

IT HAD BEEN TWO MONTHS SINCE THE LAST TIME THAT NICK HURT HER.
He promised Claire that it would never happen again. It had been happening every two to six months for the past three years.
Every couple of months, there was one bad day when her world fell apart. One bad day and then about a week of silence, and everything went back to normal. Normal was a good life. Nick and Claire Jamison were successful business owners with nice cars and a beautiful home that overlooked the river.
Was it better to live without love, or to give up everything for it? Claire wasn't ready to give up everything. She didn't like the situation, but she could handle it as long as Nick never touched her twelve-year-old son, Matthew. That would be the end. Nick ignored Matt. They ignored each other. It wasn't the best relationship, but Claire knew how hard things would be, by herself.
She was a divorced mother with only a high school education. There weren't a lot of job opportunities for her in Morgan, South Dakota. Life was a daily struggle before she married Nick. In the beginning, things were good. Nick had a son, Max, that was the same age as Matthew. They were a happy family. But after years of abuse, Claire found it hard to love Nick, anymore. He accused her of being over sensitive and living in her own sensitive little world. Maybe he was right.
The abuse got worse. Claire was ready to give up her life with Nick, when she realized that her life was in danger. She and her son try to escape and start a new life. She rents an apartment and gets a job, waitressing.
Claire didn't realize that Nick was stalking her. One by one, everyone that she loves, disappear, leaving her . . . all alone.
