Remember your elementary teacher/s? I do, since my Aunt Rose was my teacher, grades one through eight, 1955-63. This memoir contains my experiences in her one-room country schoolhouse in eastern South Dakota, a school that closed shortly after I graduated. My intent has been to honor my promise to her that I would help her publish a collection of her writings in book form, a promise I made as I graduated from college, 1972. Therefore, throughout the memoir, I've included several of Aunt Rose's authored selections. I'm late with completing my promise, but I know she would understand and appreciate my efforts. What was it like to attend a one-room school with no more than six students during any one year, a school located in the midst of a South Dakota farming community? It's a unique experience that is likely not available to most students after 1960. Is it possible for a child to attend a traditional public school these days and never have a classmate? That was my experience and I survived the competition, being at the top of my class. . . as well as the bottom.
