Baroness d'Orczy was born in Tarna?rs, Hungary to a noble family. She was educated at home by private tutors and showed an early aptitude for writing. She married Baroness Arminius d'Orczy in 1885 and, following the birth of her first child, moved to London, where she began to write novels, plays and articles for leading newspapers. Her first novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, was published in 1905 and was an instant success. The novel was adapted for the stage by her husband and was first performed in 1907.
