On the plains of North Texas in 1879, Harvard professor Dr. Whitley discovers the unconscious body of a young man dressed like a Plains Indian, though his ethnic heritage is obviously African. When the young man is revived, it is determined that he has been raised by the Kiowa Indians. The world of Thomas Beltram is forever changed when he accepts an invitation to accompany Dr. Whitley to Massachusetts. He is confronted with some harsh realities about social and racial discrimination, but he also finds love and acceptance in his affection for Fiona, Dr. Whitley's daughter. Through his friendship with Fiona, Thomas finds an escape from a dark past that continues to haunt him, in spite of his efforts to forget. Eventually, he realizes that he will never forget, and he cannot escape the past. To the Whitley's surprise, he leaves in the night to face his dark memories, returning to Texas to find and confront his father.
