I wish I could tell my younger self that the violence, poverty, and instability I experienced weren't evidence that the world was inherently broken, but that systems could be changed. I wish I could tell her that her pain had meaning, that her story would one day help others understand their own. I can't go back and tell her that. But I can tell you.
