Joe DeSantis was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, just a stone's throw from New York City. Upon graduation from Manhattan College in 1974 with a B.A. degree in English, he taught briefly before embarking on a career with the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation, where he stayed for 20 years, rising to the position of Park Superintendent. During that span, he returned to school and received a M.S. degree in Recreation Services from Herbert Lehman College.
In 1988, he left to become Superintendent of Parks for the City of White Plains, NY, and subsequently retired but returned to White Plains for two stints as Superintendent of Parking after receiving a M.A. degree in Military History/Civil War Studies from American Military University.
His works of fiction include The Dartmoor Horror, the ongoing storyline that picks up where Hound of the Baskervilles leaves off, Blue Dawn Over Gettysburg and its sequel, Escape From Devil's Den, both supernatural historical fiction that take place during the Civil War.
A Rose by Any Other Name: Nicknames From The Civil War is his first entry into non-fiction. The work blends historical facts, insults, compliments, and sarcasm in such a way as to propel the reader into the minds of 19th century's American soldiers, politicians, and civilian population. He presently resides in Brewster, NY.
