A Ridiculously Accurate History of Drums for Geniuses: From Body Percussion to JD Beck

By João Figueiredo

Take one species with hands, curiosity and very little quality control. Give it caves, rituals, armies, jazz clubs, marching bands, drum shops and eventually the internet. The result is the history of drumming: strange, brilliant, global and occasionally ridiculous.

A Ridiculously Accurate History of Drums for Geniuses follows that journey from body percussion and ancient drums to New Orleans pioneers, the birth of the drum set, jazz innovators, rock, metal, fusion and the drummers of today. It is historically grounded, dryly funny and deliberately obsessed with how the drum kit became one of the weirdest and greatest instruments humans ever assembled.

If you like your music history accurate, your humour dry, and your drumming gloriously over-analysed, this book was made for you.

Jo o Figueiredo is a drum educator, author and founder of Music Lab.
