PR Handbook for Beginners

This is a good PR handbook for small and medium business owners, especially retailing, e.g. flower shop, grocery shop, etc¡KAs a business owner, you may have to do many messy stuff that they just stop you from thinking ways for your shops to make more money. This book will really touch your nerve, ¡§Ops¡KI should have thought of this long time before, why I cannot think of it?¡¨ E.g. invite media to have a shop visit of your candy shop; contact reporter for the latest promotion that you shop is running; promoting your product in newsgroup; organize a ¡§one-day¡¨ tour with a community organization for seniors if you are engaging in travel business, etc.PR beginners would appreciate this book very much as it provides tips for practicing PR that some other PR books may overlook. E.g. tips for dealing with media, and preparing speech, etc. This is actually a PR handbook with blanks for you to fill in so that you can participate in the book and find your own way to do PR with its guidance.Tailored to small and medium enterprise (SME), the book suggests PR events which are in a smaller scale and with a lower cost and even no cost! Like creating buzz and attracting media to visit your shop. But they can be effective too! I like the 12-week plan at the end of the book as it even prepares a matrix for you to fill in your PR plan in 12-week. It pushes people to take action right after finishing the book. The book also reminds me one thing. Public relations can let more people to know how good you business is as well as how bad your business is. Buzz creation and media promotion can ruin your reputation even faster if your business is not good enough. Apart from advertising, and other marketing tools, PR can be one of the important elements in nurturing your business and you can enjoy the fruits from PR in a forseeable future if you keep on taking good care of it.

A good quick yet perceptive look at PR.

Of the several books I have perused concerning PR/publicity, I found this one to be one of the most helpful. In concise terms, Slack gives us a worthy primer of an often neglected area. In addition, the book is laid out as a workbook, to help YOU assess your organization's grasp of the subject. It was very helpful in starting a publicity plan, and the format helped make it easy to teach the concept to others. This is for the people that don't want a degree in PR, and don't want to hire someone who does. It will give you a great running start, lifting you above much of the confusion in the discipline.

A Practical Handbook of PR for Small and Medium Business

A Public Relations Survival Kit is a handbook of Public Relation for small medium enterprise. Slack is an executive in public relations for more than 10 years; she is a public relation consultant of small and medium-sized businesses. And Slack expressed her views and tips toward 9 areas of PR in this book. She understood the constrains of small and medium enterpriser, which has little budget, no experience and time, and no any knowledge about PR. Therefore, Slack try to use a simple and clear description to describe the ideas like positive buzz, the tips of working with media, tips to gain publicity, the donation and sponsorship as well to the SME owners. And the important things bring to the readers are explain the myth of people toward PR, after the full and detail explanation, readers would know what PR really is which also help the businessman understand what is the role of PR in their businesses. The author in each chapter has used a lot of examples to describe the ideas she wanted to present. And all of the cases were fit to the target and all of them are related to small-medium enterprise. For businessman, if he can follow the tips in each chapter and notice her advices and reminds, several mistakes also can be prevented during the practice, also, following the whole year planning in last chapter, and implement it well, an effective PR campaign must be done. For marketer, this book really a handbook, it will teach you how to find some information, the strategies in each step to deal with your business partners, the things need to concern, all of them can be found from the book. But one thing need to notice is that, this book only focus on PR, but we know, marketing is an interactive function, and PR solely cannot make a company survive, if you want to know how PR can interact with other marketing tools like advertising, this book unfortunately cannot satisfy you. Actually, this is the weakness of this book.Anyway, the insight from the book is not theoretical; it is practical, it really aims to help SME to survive.

Refreshing look at an often mystifying subject!

As a small business owner, the topic of Public Relations has seemed overwhelming. I'm a work at home mom who runs an accounting business, how can I possibly tackle working with the media or justify spending a small fortune to hire a PR expert? With this book, I found out I don't have to!Each topic is explained in a easy to follow format which is presented in a direct manner and geared toward small to mid sized businesses. There are several worksheets and lots of space provided to record your thoughts and ideas. It is written in a positive, uplifting tone which provides encouragement for other business owners like myself who lacked confidence in this area. Written by someone with years of PR experience, I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
