Wholesome nostalgic story

Sara Dubose is a gifted writer who has produced a wholesome story set in the nostalgic South and which is told through a winsome young narrator, Flea. If you enjoy a sense of home and place set back in time, you will enjoy being in the company of Flea's friends and family who authentically embody the joys and tensions of a faith in God and a love for one another lived out daily which, ultimately, effects a great hope for tomorrow.

Moving story about growing up in the 1950s South

A Promise for Tomorrow by Sara Dubose tells the story of one year in the life of nine-year old Flea who is growing up in the 1950s South. The book has many parallels to To Kill a Mocking Bird: oddly named female narrator, the innocence of the children and the impending darkness that threatens them, the upstanding father figure. But Dubose makes the book stand on its own merit by including faith into this story. The book is written with the simple yet sophisticated language of children with alternating innocence and wisdom. Flea learns about faith and what it means to have hope while facing the normal occurances in a little girl's life. She's an engaging narrator who the reader can't help but root for. The book does leave several storylines up in the air, but with that promise for tomorrow of hope for characters and reader alike.

good summer read

"A Promise for Tomorrow" is a perfect read for those who remember Alabama in the 1950's and enjoy reminiscing. Its main character, Flea, touches readers with her inner conflict of needing to help others versus self-preservation and self-comfort. Readers will perhaps recognize several of the characters as resembling people of their own acquaintance, such as the pessimistic Miss Velma, or the fun-loving Uncle Carl. Put "A Promise for Tomorrow" on your summer reading list.
